The Israeli-controlled West Bank, which was once home to about one-third of the Jewish population of the Middle East, has become a key hub of construction in the construction industry in recent years, with thousands of buildings being constructed annually.
The latest construction projects in Bethlehem include the construction of several luxury apartments and a $30 million sports complex, which is expected to open in 2020, according to the Bethlehem-based Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
But, according a report by CNN, construction activity in the West Bushehr neighborhood of the Palestinian city has been on a steady decline for years, and has only increased recently.
While the Israeli government has made a concerted effort to improve the quality of life for the Palestinian people, construction projects have continued to fall short of expectations.
The city of Hebron, for example, is the epicenter of a controversial project that has been under construction for more than two years.
The West Bank is home to the largest concentration of Jewish settlements in the region.
According to CNN, the project, which has been going on for more or less the last decade, is expected create more than 1,400 jobs and create up to 4,000 housing units.
The Israeli government announced the construction in June 2016, and construction resumed in the spring of 2018.
The project, however, has faced opposition from the local population, who have demanded more affordable housing and more housing opportunities for them, in addition to their right to live there.
Construction in the area, which will include more than 700 housing units, has not met expectations.
The West Bank’s municipal council passed a resolution in October demanding an end to the project.
The Palestinian Authority is currently trying to resolve the dispute, with both sides agreeing to suspend the project until a final agreement can be reached.
